Stretch & Catch is an easy method that I have developed to help all children learn to read. This book is designed to be an easy guide for teachers to teach their students the Stretch & Catch method at each student’s instructional level.
WHY STRETCH & CATCH?
Stretch & Catch is designed to have the student use his/her own fingers to help them visualize a pattern within a word. In order to learn how to read, a student must understand how words work. By learning how to Stretch & Catch words, your students will use many of their senses to see how words are pulled apart and then put back together. Stretch & Catch follows a technique that allows the adult to teach a child how to read & spell while using their fingers to Stretch (sound out the word by raising one finger at a time, per sound) and then Catch by pulling his/her fingers back together and quickly saying the word. In order for your students to use this strategy as a reading strategy, they must be able to look at a word, identify the pattern he/she sees within the word, then Stretch the word to hear all of the sounds within that word, and finally Catch the word to be able to identify what word he/she Stretched.
