DR Affricates

Why do children write the word DROP, JROP? Children spelling the /DR/ sound using JR are using but confusing affricates. An affricate is a consonant that begins as a stop and releases as a fricative, generally with the same place of articulation. It can be difficult for a child to decide if the sound is a single phoneme or a consonant pair.
